The COVID-19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on persons with disabilities.
It has revealed and exacerbated the inequalities affecting the world's 1 billion people living with disabilities and the challenges they face in every aspect of their lives.
This includes limited access to information and services in braille or in sign languages, for instance, at a time when access to information is more vital than never.
In the context of educational crisis and school closures due to the pandemic, the most vulnerable are also the most exposed to the risk of learning disruptions putting their future at stake.
More can be done to harness educational resources digital skills and technologies in support of inclusion and to build the capacities of teachers for an education that is accessible to all.
The global crisis has underlined the need to build more inclusive and accessible societies for persons with disabilities and most importantly together with them.
On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, UNESCO calls on the global community to mobilize for an inclusive response to the crisis through the active engagement of persons with disabilities and through solutions that address their specific needs.
We must ensure that education and information remain common goods available to all in order to achieve inclusive sustainable development and safeguard everyone's fundamental right to participate in political, economic, social and cultural life in line with the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.
On this international day, let us celebrate diversity, inclusion and human dignity, the very principles that will guide us in our efforts to build back better in the post COVID-19 era.
